TREVOR 2017 - Who will take lead in series?
Trevor XXI, 2017 - Hawkstone Park
Prich continued his role as event organiser with the assistance of the Wee Man. After considerable research a return to Hawkstone Park for an unprecedented third Trevor was announced, murmurs of content were heard from all that have attended this venue in the past. Indeed only two trevorers will be playing here for the first time, the mighty McGuff and recent ROW debutant of last year, JR.
Pre Trevor
With two new skips in place, Hoody and Dronny, their first task was to confirm availability. After the triumphant success of Woodhall Spa in 2016, 14-a-side was soon agreed upon.
With both Aussie exiles from the OHA team now returned back Down Under after recent UK returns, the news filtering from the Bush telephone that both would be playing in 2017 provided a great early fillip for captain Hoody. How they could they not return with such fond memories of this venue? Rich, of course, held that putt on the 18th green in 2001 to secure the first ever Trevor tie and Jules presented us with his magical short game masterclass in 2010 - LT
Unfortunately the most recent addition to the OHA team, young master Suds, booked a family holiday on the Trevor dates, he will sadly missed. This did, though, allow a slot for the return of LT after his sabbatical in 2016. No player is more excited or nervous about playing again in this great golf event.
For the ROW skipper, Dronny, he soon found out that Medsey would be taking another rest from the Trevor having failed to live with the pressures on his much anticipated return at Woodhall. This place soon being filled by Trevor legend Matt Watson after a family sabbatical forced him to miss the 2016 thriller. Then a shock for the team as undefeated skipper Colin had to withdraw for personal reasons, a big loss for the ROW. However this allowed a slot for another return of a regular trevorer after a three year absence, to the mercurial Welshman, Wyn; always unsure of which golf game will come out on a daily out basis, but always sure that he will be a legend in the bar!!
So the teams were finalised...hopefully with no late dramas to unfold. Time for battle in late July!!...and of course it would not be the Trevor without late drama. 24 hours before the off Lethal was forced to pull out of the event with a recurrence of an ongoing back problem, the signs of aging teams taking its toll!! The ROW high council hastily convened and, once again, delved into their reserves in the valleys to introduce Simmo into the fold to make a Trevor debut (and what a debut it proved to be - LT).
Now it was finally game on.
With all 28 trevorers arriving the night before, a convivial evening was enjoyed catching up on news, the draws were made and everybody retired to bed in eager anticipation of the battle commencing the following morning.

Day 1 - ROW storm into massive lead after Four Ball Romp
Greensomes Scores: OHA 4 ROW 3
El Presidente, Prich had the honour of hitting the first tee shot early in the morning with the OHA edging a close session. As always the matches didn't necessarily go to form. Captain Hoody's plan to top load the order misfired as the first four matches finished 2-2. Jim and Toby at the top of the order did pull off a great half with a spirited comeback winning the last three holes. The rather quirky pairing of big guns JG and Buster losing comfortably to what proved to be by the end of the weekend a strong ROW pairing of Sarge and debutant Simmo. Wins, though, came at the tail with two victories, firstly for the captain and recent past captain, Joey squeezing home 1 up against Grant & Karlos and perhaps an even bigger surprise Killer & Saint winning handsomely against what looked on paper a strong ROW pairing of Jack & JR. In a Trevor first the OHA captain had to disappear into a local field mid match for a very private moment!!!

The afternoon session was one of triumph for the ROW and, as the weekend unfolded, proved to be the decisive session. The afternoon weather was not kind with miserable damp conditions for most of the front nine. Fortunately the rain did abate later in the day. This was, in fact, the first really wet day since Parkstone way back in 2007, not a bad run in a country where the summer doesn't always guarantee fine, dry weather!! (It did rain very heavily at the Taffy Trevor in 2009 - we were in Wales after all!! - but somehow all the rain fell when off the course - LT)
One by one the first 5 results came in, each time the ROW blue was recorded on the Trevor scoreboard. OHA big gun pairing Buster & Clacks were outgunned by the Welsh pairing of Prich and Simmon, both OHA boys misfiring as their games were firing blanks; debutant Simmo the rock and ending 100% on his first day. Then an ROW stalwart pairing of Woz & Sarge had a fine win against a strong OHA pairing of Copey and Toby, although the Wee Man struggled with an injury that would have a profound affect over the rest of the weekend. JG and Joey, who by his own admission really struggled, were comfortably beaten by another Welsh duo, Jon & Kev. Somerset boys , Matt & Softers comfortably saw off the OHA Aussie pairing of Rich & Jules and the return of the Thundercats, Hoody and Leafy, did not purr and Dronny & Jack returned the 5th win for the ROW. Fortunately, once again, the OHA tail flourished with the veteran pairing of Jim & Kill gaining a half and Saint, this time with Nicky Boy, as the team anchor won comfortably. Perhaps, these late points might just be enough to keep the OHA in the match?

The evening was a thoroughly enjoyable night. Dinner in a private dining room, the first of Prichy's teasers followed by some momentous new Trevor's from the new High Council. Some serious trevoring had obviously taken place as Prichy firstly unveiled the first official Trevor logo. Having initially contacted Saatchi & Saatchi to undertake this important design, their costings proved beyond the Trevor budget, leaving a local Cowbridge marketing team (of one)to create the design. Murmurs of content were heard through the room when unveiled.
Then the next new Trevor was presented, once again, proving a great hit with all the group, this being the introduction of the Trevor Hall of Fame. Four Trevor legends were inducted in the inaugural year with Jules doing the honours of presenting the speeches for the 2 ROW inductees and Prich, himself, for the 2 OHA trevorers; the four being Softers & Woz along with Rich and finally Jules. Each were awarded their Hall of Fame "cap" warmly acknowledged by the rest.
Sadly Copey's injury had worsened and it looked likely that for the first time in Trevor history, there would be a player missing on day two. The High Council hastily convened to discuss contingency plans and decided that any final decision would be made the following morning in the hope that a miracle recovery for the Wee Man might happen overnight.
After dinner certain players continued late into the night with others slowly disappearing to their rooms in readiness for day two. Can the OHA turn things around to make a game of it??

Day 2 - Hampton comeback gives singles hope
Greensomes Score: OHA 3½ ROW 3½
So Copey failed his fitness test leaving Buster to play against Prich & Matt in the greensomes. Sadly his game still was in disrepair and after he was comfortably beaten even with what, was a Trevor first, having a caddie to try and pull him through. Even Copey's inspirational words were not enough for a man completely out of sorts!!
In the first two games, both matches were real closely fought affairs between four very strong pairings who just couldn't be separated. Joey and Clacks were both back on song to record a win, JR & Softers took care of a point for the ROW, a third halved match was followed by a Barmy Army point for the OHA with tail ender Saint recording his third win alongside Leafy. So back in the clubhouse, the session shared leaving the ROW still seven points clear. Clearly an OHA win in the afternoon better ball session was now even more critical to keep the Trevor alive. Would the Lion roar?

In match one JG certainly did roar. With Copey's injury, he had to take on the might of Dronny & JR on his own, and even with a slight handicap adjustment, this was always going to be a tall order. With Copey offering sound counsel on his bag JG squeezed home on the final green for a memorable win.
In a real big gun match, game two was halved although Toby had a good chance to sneak the win on the final green. Match three was always a tight affair but a late OHA rally turned around the match for another win in the third game to finish on the 18th. The next two games were also tight encounters, both finishing on the 17th, both matches being wins for the ROW. Simmo alongside Karlos continued his fine form and Jack & Woz brought home the second point.
Once again, the Hampton tail wagged beating another two Welsh pairings. (Over the course of the first two days, the last two matches brought home a remarkable 10½ points out of 12 - LT). Saint continued to thrive playing alongside a revitalised Joey winning comfortably against a strong pair of Jon & Prich. Perhaps an even bigger surprise was the win in the last match as Jules & Kill recorded the same 5&3 margin to beat Kev & Sarge.

The Lion, without roaring, certainly bellowed as a good session win reduced the overall margin to just three points. The consequence of this mini revival meant that an 8-6 win for the OHA in the singles would complete a remarkable comeback, a very achievable situation. A Trevor tie was not possible this year, but the match was still alive!!
Once again a great night was enjoyed in the Trevor Dining Room. More teasers over dinner, followed by two remarkable odes from the bard, Jules, highlighting what the ROW and OHA represent at the Trevor (videos to follow - LT). Then the Fines Committee aficionados, Rich & Softers, presented a brutal and amusing set of Fines with certain individuals really feeling the brunt of the pain!!
Then, of course, was the much anticipated Singles draw. As always, after the event both teams whispered murmurs of approval at the draw, the OHA feeling that they could win the 8 games required, equally the ROW happy that the 6½ matches required were clearly there to be won. Only time would tell.
Again, another Trevor first, with two players with injury woes, Copey still not recovered and Kev struggling with his long-term neck problem. They were paired together with a halved match agreed. Players then recorded their Trevorcast results to Jon who then presented the resulys of these to all; this showed that in match 11, Matt would bring home the victory for the ROW. (In recent times this had not proved an accurate guide, would this year it prove to be right - LT).
Boys slowly sidled away to get some much needed sleep but for the last men standing, they witnessed JG, of all people, leading a late night sing song before finally retiring!!

Day 3 - The Singles
Singles Score: OHA 15 ROW 13
So, so close for Hampton, yet no cigar!! Real turmoil for one OHA player whose final denouement reflected the poor weekend he had suffered on the course.
The first four matches after the agreed half brought a wave of OHA yellow. Leafy comfortably beating an out of sorts Prich (Perhaps the pressures of running the Trevor were taking their toll - I know LT), Clacks pulled off a good win against the dependable JR, Toby trounced Grant suffering with the unmentionable shanks but also against a man really on his game, and JG continued his fine play to beat the ROW skip. Match 6 saw the first real point probably "against the head" as Joey earned a fine half playing the might of Jon. Then came the ROW revival; Simmo completed a magnificent weekend of golf with a win against Disco (maybe spurred on after his verbal assault during the Fines last night - LT), and Sarge, strong all weekend, beat Jim in a close match that went up the 18th. Saintly eventually took care of Karlos, at one point an upset looked on the cards as the rank outsider took an early 3 hole lead, but he was unable to sustain this form against the OHA rock over the weekend. Kill, as usual, failed to turn up in the singles, an easy win for an in form Woz.
So here we were, 10 matches in the overall match score now in favour of the OHA 31½ - ROW 30½ . With the OHA top order top loaded, could the weaker tail in terms of form over the weekend eke out the two wins required? The finished matches watching the games unfold on the course were forced back to the clubhouse due to some late heavy squalls of rain leaving them in the dark as to the progress of these game changing matches.
In the penultimate four ball, Buster had somehow found some late form to take a 2 up lead against Matt with back to back birdies on 14 and 15, Matt, though, fired in one of his own on 16 to bring it back to 1 down. Jules, trailing 3 down with four to play held a magnificent curling 6 footer on 15 to get an unlikely half then followed this up with two fine holes to square the match on 17. Wyn, still looking for his first Trevor win, was now really feeling the pain of the Trevor!!
In the back two games, it seemed that the matches were to be shared. Jack was in control throughout against the OHA skip, whilst Nick, once again in the singles, was defying the odds to be a few holes clear against Softers. So it really was down to the penultimate group. On 17 Matt played a remarkable shot after an errant drive to hit the green, he managed to two putt from long range holding a clutch six footer. Buster, also on in two, and really feeling the heat three putted missing his par putt from a similar distance, now both matches were all square on the 18th.
The 18th (it pains me to write!! - LT). Jules sadly failed to complete a remarkable fightback with, for once, his short game letting him down but Wyn did stand up to the plate to play this hole showing some true Trevor grit to sneak home one up. So, unless something remarkable happened behind, it seemed the Trevorcast was proved correct and match 11 was the decisive one. Buster looked a strong favourite his long game standing up leaving a two putt from 20 foot to win after Matt had dumped hi second into a greenside trap to finally record a bogey. With everybody watching, and aware of the importance of the putt, Buster rolled his first putt up, a little tentatively to leave a knee jerker but extremely makeable putt. He failed!!...probably summing up the turmoil his game was in all weekend. Buster was crestfallen, consoled by his three great playing partners. Never has the pain that the Trevor can bring been felt more.
News had filtered in that Jack had won, Nick did hold on to beat Softers on the last and the ROW had sneaked home to win by the narrowest margin of one point to take a lead in the overall series. This being the first time they have led for 10 years after winning in Bournemouth in 2007, the OHA still looking for their first win since Goodwood in 2012.

Trevorcast results were announced with Karlos, who had delved into the Trevor website for form, taking the money. (all those years as a sports punter finally reaping their reward - LT).
The trophy was presented by Hoody to the winning ROW captain, Dronny who announced that his successor in 2018 would be the mighty Grant. Both captains quite rightly, on behalf of everybody, passed on their thanks to the sterling efforts of Prich & Copey for organising and running another successful weekend with Dronny presenting thank you gifts to both.
Goodbyes were said with trevorers heading back to their respective homes to reflect on another great weekend.

Trevor's Summary
Amongst the losing OHA team, Saintly was the beacon of light becoming the first player in Trevor history to record a 100% record for the second time. Indeed this rare accolade has only been achieved on 10 previous occasions over the 21 year history of the event - LT. This achievement was all the more remarkable as Saint had failed to win a game at Woodhall Spa in 2016, highlighting that any person's Trevor form can vary year by year. JR provides further proof as he topped of the ROW playing records in 2016 and, as highlighted above, is firmly propping up the table in 2017.
ROW late replacement, Simmo, just missed out on a 100% record with a halved game in a greensomes match being his only dropped point. No debutant has ever achieved a 100% record - so close Simmo - LT. Two other ROW players were unbeaten over the weekend, Woz and Matt W, a welcome return to form from two Trevor giants. With Jack and Sarge only losing one match each whilst recording big points scores, these 5 ROW boys proved the foundation of their team success over the weekend.
Indeed looking back over recent Trevors, both Sarge and Jack continue to display strong Trevor form; Sarge winning three matches at the last three Trevors with the fourth being 100%, the last time this was achieved before Saint this year. Jack has 3½ and 4 wins to his name in the previous two Trevors. The statistical evidence suggests that these two are not just maintaining a strong game, but perhaps continue to improve, a rare achievement amongst the Trevor fold as most other games seem in decline.
For the OHA, the recent records suggest a return to form for Toby who has recorded two strong years having struggled for a few seasons. On the flip side, captain Hoody (sorry to mention-LT) continues to struggle with just 1 win to his name at the last four Trevors and may have to accept that a handicap increase is inevitable. Indeed his last successful campaign was back in 2012, the last time the OHA team recorded a win; 5 years of hurt for the OHA squad!!
For the majority of other trevorers, form tends to be a roller coaster ride both on an annual basis and daily within a Trevor year. Shoot the lights out golf to a day of misery and despair - the beauty of the Trevor!!!
JG's record, although statistically just above average deserves mention. Having lost both games on day one with partners who failed to support him (I know as I was one and the second, my room mate for the weekend, admitted he went awol too - LT). However, in a Trevor first, he became a giant on day two winning his better ball match against two opponents after Copey's sad withdrawal through injury and continued his form with a strong showing in the singles to beat the ROW skip.
Aside from playing records, Dronny, returning to the captaincy after 11 years to complete his two year tenure, became only the 4th captain to have a 100% record.
