Trevor XIX, 2014 - Forest Pines, Lincolnshire
A return up north to a delightful 27 hole venue, perfect for the match format over the weekend. Two new captains (see Press Report), the overall match score now reduced to only one point after the ROW's successful 2013 campaign and a new Trevor venue, should all lead to another exciting instalment in the Trevor.
Pre Trevor
With the Trevor venue and date set for next year by the conclusion of the 2013 event, the captains returned to their respective base camps to start the process of assembling their teams for 2014. With the new technology of a website reply form now operational, The Trevor moves further forward into the modern era. Has Paul McGinley despatched his availability form to his Ryder Cup hopefuls?? I think not!!! - LT
So, for the majority, another trek up north to the resort venue of Forest Pines in Lincolnshire; for the three English trevorers who have set up home in the dark tundra regions north of the Watford Gap a definite home venue.
ROW skip Kev Davies, buoyant from his team’s comprehensive win in 2013 remained confident that he may be able to field a full strength team in the knowledge of how good the sweet taste of victory felt for all his boys. Sadly one notable early absentee was announced by the withdrawal of Trevor legend, Woz who has returned to the rigours of raising his young family whilst seeking suitable counselling to try and rediscover a golf game for a possible comeback in the future?? We all wish him luck and hope that there really is somebody out there to achieve this herculanian task and we will see him strolling the Trevor fairways again soon – he will be missed.
Newly appointed OHA skip, Joey O (now renamed The Colonel whilst in office) had a much harder task. One successful 2013 team member had already declared himself a non-starter as Rich’s three year UK posting had run its
course and the arduous journey from Oz was not on the radar for 2014. Then two further OHA legends, our Scottish brethren, declared themselves as only being possibles – JG always has to wrestle a family pass and felt he owed them one back and along with new work commitments, he announced that the Trevor looks a remote option; Clacks and summer commitments to his business always creates a problem – a tough call for him but understandable with The Trevor falling in that 6 week period that you may call summer in Scotland – is it really that long – LT??!! Aside from these issues, The Colonel somehow needs to galvanise his troops after the despair of 2013. The early indications certainly seemed to read that for the first time in years, it was the OHA with team issues and not the ROW.
Like any true military leader, his early campaign began with planning a family trip Down Under to try and resolve the great Poulter handicap scandal (Trevor Press 2013) and to also begin his own personal warm weather training camp to reinvigorate his tired body after too many years of hard slog in the dirty world of corporate finance.
Then, in true Trevor style, the first and really sad news filtered back from the valleys. Poor Kev who missed a long run of Trevors from 2007 due to injury announced that this issue had reared its ugly head once again and his prognosis meant that any golf was off the radar for the foreseeable future – and with a heavy heart, he withdrew himself from the ROW team for 2014 and, of course, with this the captaincy (Trevor Press 2014). We all wish him well with his recovery at this very distressing time.
The show, of course, must go on…..so the ROW jungle drums went into action to find a new leader and without delay fully aware of the repercussions of a rudderless ship, soon announced that Colin would be the man, a selection that sent murmurs of approval through both camps. Colin’s integrity, competitive edge, good sense of fun and bloody mindedness, all ticking the boxes required for leadership – and with a sense of karmic symmetry he will now be
matched up against an old adversary fresh from the recent minor incident in their singles match in 2013. It must be said that both parties remained innocent within this controversy, but yet it still adds a nice edge!! – LT
So the ROW confirmed a team of 12, the OHA remained uncertain of numbers with the aforementioned question marks remaining outstanding.
Then Rich suddenly made a u-turn announcing himself available and raring to go. The Trevor timings sitting well with a family commitment back in the UK – so game on and providing much needed good news in the OHA camp. Then a bombshell....the withdrawal of one of the recent OHA big guns as the Headmaster declared himself unavailable. Jim has suffered with a hip injury for years from one too many falls on the black runs in the Alps in his attempts to wow the locals with his skiing prowess and has eventually had to bite the bullet with an impending operation early in the summer. Perhaps this is an indication of the future problems the OHA may face with their average team age considerably higher than the spring chickens from the ROW - LT. With a degree of further irony, news filtered that JG, having secured a family pass to play, sustained his own injury with a crash and burn on the slopes in February. Despite extensive treatment, JG failed a fitness test in late May; Coupled with this news, Clacks, as perhaps expected, confirmed that work commitments will prevent him playing.
So now the Colonel, in his first year, finds himself without three major OHA stalwarts and big points winners in recent years and only 11 players to boot. Fortunately a reserve was always in the wings and Jim Suds can now firmly become a part of the OHA fold after his unique debut match in 2012 when he helped out the Trevor cause by representing both teams over this weekend. Jim offers youth, a developing game, a very competitive streak and a unique brand of humour that will be an asset to both the OHA team and weekend as a whole.
So there we were at the end of May with the teams finalised and the captains now able to concentrate their efforts on the battle ahead. The two captains met in early July to finalise handicaps, the casual golfers dusted down their clubs in readiness for the off and, fortunately, no late injury scares to rock the boat - Trevor XIX game on!!
A new high of 15 golfers (9 OHA & 6 ROW) arrived early for a practice round on the Friday with a further 6 arriving in the evening. A relaxed evening of preamble with a late dinner followed by the draw for the greensomes that raised the excitement level with the anticipation of the Trevor starting the following morning.
Jules missed the eve of Trevor dinner hotfooting it to Scunthorpe General in the first of two OHA injury dramas over the weekend. Hopefully suitable medication was on hand to allow him to swing more freely!!!

Day 1 - Early OHA joy, afternoon despair!!
The OHA came out strong nailing down two early wins. This was followed by high drama in match three; Jules & Rich sat dormie three down, then dramatically won 7 and 8 to set a final hole shoot out. Jules had a three footer to win the hole and half the match but sadly for the OHA and with much relief to Jack & Matt, they watched the putt slide by the hole to sneak home. In match four a tight game throughout, finished with the points shared. The mighty pairing that is Prich & Dronny proved too strong for Saint & Kill in match five, but the session win was secured by a great win by the Hampton tail that definitely wagged with Toby & Nick taking a great scalp.

The ROW came out strong in the better ball with two comfortable early wins that stimulated an afternoon of dominance in the four ball session. The "Colonels" buoyed by morning success were unable to repeat the same taking a hammering from a strong ROW pairing of Prich & Lethal. The only small comfort was a last hole victory for LT & Suds that came from winning both 17 and 18 to turn the game on its head at the death. The back two games were closer affairs but the power of the ROW saw them inch home in both games. So another torrid afternoon for Hampton, the second year that the ROW proved too strong on day one. The early alarm bells were ringing - too many OHA boys undercooked and not firing against a team that seemed to all be on board with their games all in order. The omens for the weekend were a little worrying!!

The evening involved the normal revelries with a nice captain's treat as they shared brandy after dinner with all trevorers. Prich, as always, provided an interesting quiz over dinner won by the intellectuals seated on the "recent captain's table".
LT announced the venue that had won its bid to host next year's milestone event - this being a return to Saunton (host to the 10th anniversary event in 2005 - LT). To a man, this was well received and hopes were very high that both camps would have full availability for 2015.
Hampton convened for the first of a number of crisis meetings whilst ROW sat back enjoying their brandy with cigars in the garden!! Can the OHA reverse the situation on day two?

Day 2 - ROW domination, OHA despair!!!
A tight session with 5 games going up the last, only Rich & Nick recording a comfortable win against a surprisingly hapless Sarge & Karlos. The ROW, though, importantly edged home in three games by the slenderest of margin and two halved matches saw them win the session to further consolidate their lead. The Colonel and his deputy had a long trevor over lunch to try and put together pairings for an afternoon romp, the only way to get back into the event.

The OHA romp, my ass!!! Another torrid afternoon of complete ROW domination - three comfortable wins, one closer victory and the only solace for the OHA was two halved matches. Not surprisingly there were no OHA players unbeaten after day two whilst the ROW had a record six players with an unblemished record.
Afternoon Score OHA 2 ROW 10
Overall Score OHA 9½ ROW 26½
This massive lead means that the ROW only require a paltry two singles wins to retain the Trevor and level the overall series. This was the biggest lead ever going into the singles, personal pride realistically being the sole driving force for the OHA on day three.
The nearest the pin awards went to Leafy & Jules, a crumb of solace for the OHA over a miserable and hapless two days of golf.

The evening dinner was in teams and the OHA had to suffer the indignity of the ROW gloating over their almost unassailable lead with a tirade of songs relating to the events over the first two days - a clever use of modern lyrics, but a classless act that caused a degree of consternation in the OHA camp. That said, probably no more than they deserved after such a gutless effort over the first two days. The captain's offered port after dinner.
The singles draw threw up a number of interesting match ups. Prich looked hot favourite to join the elite band of 100%ers having drawn Kill in the singles, particularly as Kill became the second OHA to pick up an injury scare with a badly bruised arm. Going to bed he remained a 50-50 shot to actually play the following morning.
The general conversation point amongst many trevorers this evening revolved around the plight of the OHA and success of the ROW. Many interesting points were raised, the over-riding point the need to try and arrest the tide of big Trevor wins. Of course the ROW should enjoy their success borne out of a team all playing solid golf, a win is a win - but everybody agreed that the matches needed to be more competitive for the future success of the event.
Where can the OHA go? In the late 1970's the Ryder Cup expanded to include Europe after year's of US domination, the OHA, though, have less room for manoeuvre. The Colonel will need to pull out all the stops for next year with a structured campaign plan to get his boys back to the levels of golf they enjoyed in the early to mid 2000's. The Lion will need to roar again to compete with the might of the ROW!!!

Day 3 - Killer Blow in Massive Upset
There is only one place to start and this being game 12 in arguably the biggest Trevor singles upset in history!! Kill injured and with a somewhat chequered singles history against the mighty Welshman, Prichy, going into the game with a 100% record looking to become only the eleventh trevorer to achieve this record. The trevorcast showed a 24 out of 24 selection in favour of Prich!!! Somehow Kill showed some true grit and managed to overcome tiredness, injury and mental breakdown to hold onto a lead down the last to record a memorable victory. (Indeed this was Kill's first win against a full trevorer, his two previous wins being against stand ins - LT).
Game one threw up high drama; Copey found himself dormie 6 up playing well and in cruise control - and then the wheels came off. Suddenly standing on the 18th tee having lost five on the bounce, he was fully aware that a lose here would put him in the record books as the greatest Trevor meltdown (currently Rich at Dartmouth 2002 - LT). Somehow he squeezed home halving the hole in a double bogey six to spare his blushes!!
Jack, Colin and Jon all had comfortable wins to maintain their unbeaten records. Lethal squeezed home against Toby finally finding his game over the closing stretch as Toby just ran out of steam. LT had a good win against Dronny, again gained by his opponent wilting on the back nine. Sarge took out his old mate Hoody with ease and Nick & Softers shared their match, the only halved game, in what was described as a "scrappy affair", the half agreed thanks to a magnanimous concession from the gentle giant!!.
Saint finally showed his form of old by pulling off a surprise win against the mighty Grant (maybe both Grant & Leafy's results suffered as a consequence of their over indulgent social activity over the weekend??!! - LT). This was Saintly's first win in an eighteen hole match since 2011, so long overdue!!
Suds and Wyn's match had 13 holes won out of 14 - Wyn came out of the blocks showing Welsh dragon fire and having birdied the 5th hole stood four up. Then Suds became a Hampton Lion that put out the dragon's fire reeling off nine consecutive holes to win his game, a remarkable turn round!! (possibly the most consecutive holes won in any trevor?? - LT)
Karlos absolutely trounced poor Jules by the margin of 8&6, the second biggest margin in Trevor history. Obviously Karl's last day approach is to play as few holes as possible (2013 the same margin but a loss, 2012 a 7&6 win, indeed the last time he has played close to a full round being 2009 in Wales!! - LT)
As always the singles threw up a number of stories, the session was for the first time over the weekend a relatively competitive one, a small crumb of comfort on a torrid weekend for the OHA.

So Trevor XIX drew to close, a record winning margin of 19 points (previously OHA at Princes 2008- LT).
24 weary bodies were ready for home but not before the presentations. LT received a fantastic thank you from the boys with a membership to the Wine Society - a truly memorable gift, LT.
The Colonel passed the trophy over to Colin who led his team with great strength and passion throughout the weekend. Colin reminded everybody that with series now tied, all was to play for at Trevor XX at Saunton.

2014 Player Stats
Trevor's Summary
The figures below truly represent the dominance of the ROW over the weekend. Three unbeaten players (almost obviously all ROW) over a weekend is a new record.
Wyn was the only ROW player to record less than two wins, yet he played in four really tight matches that could have gone either way. Contrast this with the OHA, 2 players that failed to record a win and a further 6 with only one win clearly shows how below the pace the OHA were over the weekend. This evidence further supported by the % records - 10 ROW with records better than 50% success, only 4 OHA achieving this number. Indeed only one OHA better than 60% against an incredible 9 of the ROW.
I genuinely believe that the figures support the Handicap System introduced two years ago. The two ROW players cut by 2 shots after 2013 both recorded good performances this year (Sarge 70% and Matt W 50%) proving that they remained very competitive off their new number. Indeed Softers perhaps should not have been given back a shot after the review as he recorded a 60% win record despite, by his own admission playing no better than averagely!!! (Again an endorsement to stick by the review system - LT). Similarly no OHA player that received a handicap increase shot the lights out, a further endorsement that the system has merit. Therefore it will be used for all future casual adjustments.
That said most Hamptonians failed to turn up for the weekend, the ROW were very solid throughout the team with one or two very strong performances. Many Hampton boys are returning to their respective homes with a clear plan for the future on how to bring their game up to the required level to ensure a degree of parity for the future. Whilst the ROW will have enjoyed their victory, they also want a fight to do so - this is imperative for the future success of the Trevor. Certainly an eye opening event for the OHA as however much they enjoyed the off course revelry, on the course proved a painful and unwanted experience. Long live The Trevor!!!!
