Trevor XXIV, 2021 - Forest Pines, Lincolnshire
A return up north to this delightful 27 hole venue that hosted the 2014 Trevor won comfortably by the ROW. Based on this massive win and a similar destruction of the OHA at the last event in 2019, the ROW go into the event as firm favourites. Of course, captain Clacks will doing his utmost to reverse the form book and sign off with a win in his second year in office. He welcomes going into battle against the much anticipated appointment of Captain Jack finally stepping up to the plate to don his team's armband.

TEAMS FINALISED - AFTER LATE HICCUP
Covid 19 continues to rear its head in 2021 with the numbers reduced and a degree of jiggery pokery to complete the line ups. Consequently there were a few notable absentees:
For the OHA, two of the three overseas players are unable to travel with the existing protocols in place. Hoody and Rich forced to give the event a miss this year. Of course, the masterful planning of Jules has managed to convince the Australian government that he should be allowed to travel. LT, currently in exile in Northern Ireland, was another to fall on his sword early, a small blessing as a long-term hand injury remains an issue.
For the ROW, two of the longest serving members of their team, Dronny and Karlos, have also made themselves unavailable. Softers joins the growing number to pull out with an injury. We wish him well with resolving his back issues. Then there was a very late pull out, another back injury accounting for another long-term Trevorer, Sarge.
This means that SIX of the original 16 players were absent this year. Three disappeared off the radar way back when with Kai taking his marriage responsibilities far too seriously and Gazza and The Irritant moving to the other side of the World. Almost half of that remaining, intrepid flock that got things started at Crane Valley in 1996 were missing in action in 2021. Covid has a lot to answer for!!!
On the plus side, there were three stalwart ROW players returning. Medsey last played in 2016, Matt W 2017 and Kev 2018. Great to have these boys back again.
Indeed local boy Matt W has, once again, come up trumps lining up the late replacement for Sarge. As the weekend unfolds, it will be interesting to see where Piers sits as Matt's previous two last minute call ups have certainly come from the polar opposite personality spectrums - the legend that was Kenny and who can possibly forget Chavvy Daz at Princes in 2008?
We have another player that transferred his allegiances on a Bosman this year. JR moves across into the OHA team, a choice forced by availability but supported by days of yore when he donned the gold and black colours on the cricket field. Perhaps borne out of days as a cricketer, after four years of him enjoying sledging his opponents as an ROW player, it will be an interesting dynamic to see how he will be welcomed into the Hamptonian flock!!
This will be the third time that a player will have represented both teams. The much maligned Cooky played in his last Trevor in 2010 for the ROW team having been ostracised by his fellow Hamptonians. Suds, in his debut year, being the only player to don both team colours' at the same event at Goodwood in 2012.
The OHA also have a shared role this weekend. On day on Saintly stands in for Leafy, missing his first ever Trevor session, a family wedding accounting for his absence. Leafy arrives to play from day two to leave the Saint to chill for the rest of the weekend and allow him time to continue composing a Trevor Anthem on his guitar!!
Even with these upheavals, it remains game on and another great weekend of Trevor golf awaits the lucky 24 playing in 2021.
Friday was set aside for the practice round a large number pegged it up in a last ditch attempt to fine tune their game before battle commences. An enjoyable evening in the bar, for many the first time they had seen fellow trevorers for two years. Very emotional scenes!!!
The much anticipated draw was announced by the two skips and slowly but surely players slipped off to bed in readiness for the Trevor to start in earnest tomorrow morning.

LT Productions - few gaps in the report to be completed once all post Trevor interviews have been completed.
Day 1 - Blue is the Colour & Lions Roar!!
Firstly a schoolboy error in communication between the two captains that soon unravelled when the players emerged from the metaphorical tunnel - they were all resplendent in blue. The Trevor Fines Committee may be looking at this howler with much gravitas. I hope the skips have deep pockets!!
Secondly, the first day in Trevor history when all 24 golfers showed allegiance to the King of the Jungle and he certainly roared today. The success that everybody hoped for was the Lions winning a nail biter in the first test against the World Champions, South Africa.
As for the Hampton Lion, a roar may be a somewhat big word to use, but a first day lead for the OHA in modern times has been as rare as seeing Saintly hitting balls on a practice ground!! Indeed this was only the second instance since 2009 and one of these was by a solitary point in the epic tie at Woodhall Spa.
The morning greensomes was an incredibly tight first session with all but one game going down the last. Somewhat inevitably the session finished all tied up with two wins a piece and two halved matches. The OHA skip fronted up but just failed to bring home a point as the mighty pairing of Woz and Wyn sneaked home to secure the first Trevor point for the ROW. Similarly the ROW skip lost out in match two to the ever reliable pair of Joey and Toby. Match three was halved followed by an OHA win that was then negated as the ROW triumphed in game five.
The most remarkable game proved to be the anchor leg. Colin with new boy Piers were giving a record number of shots for a nine hole Trevor match - seven shots!! This looked a humungous challenge on paper, but the handicapping committee must of got this right as the game was halved.
Morning Score OHA 3 ROW 3

The ROW came out strong in the better ball with a comfortable win in game one that finished early enough to
secure the best seats in the house to watch The Lions rugby. The rest of the afternoon session almost belonged to the OHA, only the ever reliable Simmo playing alongside a "hot" Colin securing a second win for the ROW.
Copey & Joey and JR & Saint proved too strong for their opponents winning both their matches at a canter and the two masters of education in the Hampton flock edged home against the local boys from Donny.
Once again the final game was the match full of drama supported by a quote from Trevor HOF, Julian Poulter "probably the most extraordinary game I have been part of at the Trevor". He and Suds were in complete cruise control reaching the turn five up, then the proverbial wheels came off as the ROW boys showed their true fighting spirit winning five of the next eight holes to level the match. As the players stood on the final tee, the match all square, who knows what was going through these four golfing heads. The momentum was with the ROW and they had two calm heads to deal with any pressure, but somehow against all odds, the Hampton pair sole the last hole to win this titanic battle. Maybe a half may have been a fair result after such an epic seesaw match?
As the golfing day ended, the OHA relaxed with a warm feeling of satisfiaction. After all, the last time the Trevor was played at Forest Pines, the event was almost done and dusted after a mammoth day from the ROW. There remains a long way to go as the reality is this is actually only a slender lead. Many twists and turns await.
The bar was now a sea of blue as the boys all sat down to watch the rugby and soon all the golf was a distant blur.

Day 2 - ROW Whitewash, The Lion Slain!!!
Like a true Pirate captain, Jack rallied his lubbers from a their bunks threatening fire and brimstone on any crew member that failed to come out fighting. His call to arms was duly accepted as one by one the ROW boys returned with the spoils of war having slain their Lion.
There was a degree of difficulty in matches four and five, the rest all comfortable wins to complete what would normally be reported as a very rare session whitewash...of course, worryingly for the OHA, this was the second time in back to back Trevors that they have suffered this ignominy after a greensomes session lionwash in Jockland. Without a similar Braveheart call to arms over lunch from Clacks, the lead may prove unsurmountable going into the singles.

The call to arms did not happen and the afternoon greensomes session proved to be a torrid afternoon of ROW domination after an early OHA rally. A point and a half from the first two games offered small hope of a comeback, but this proved a false dawn as the ROW secured the next four matches. Three games were tight, match five was a comfortable win.
Afternoon Score OHA 1½ ROW 4½
Overall Score OHA 12½ ROW 23½
This is the most dominant day in the history of the Trevor, the ROW securing 16½ points of the 18 available. Consequently with such domination, ten of the twelve ROW boys were unbeaten today, Captain Jack may be having words with his two failures!! There were three ROW boys who lost both games on day one that came out with flashing blades to record two wins on day two. True fighting spirit from Grant, Lethal and Medsey.
Three remain unbeaten after two days, Colin, Prich and Simmo with the boys from Southerndown both going into the singles with that rare opportunity to become 100%ers over the weekend. Ironically Prich was in the same position the last time we were at Forest Pines to then lose his singles match in one of the biggest Trevor upsets as an injured Kill took out the mighty Welshman. His club mate is proving to be one of the most successful trevorers in history, Simmo striking with a 75% win record since his debut back in 2017.
Not surprisingly a few Hamptonians have less than envious records. Kill, Nick and Leafy go into day three without a win to their name although to be fair to Leafy he has only played on one day. The bigger surprise is the demise of the OHA skip who is staring down the barrel of the ignominy of an even rarer event, a 0% record. Obviously the pressures of captaincy are proving too big a burden!!
This massive lead means that the ROW only require three and a half singles wins to retain the Trevor. Miracles do happen, but with confidence high in the ROW camp and most of their guns firing, perhaps personal pride is realistically the sole driving force for the OHA on day three.

The evening dinner was late into the night and, from reports from afar, a disappointing affair with some sub standard nosebag. Thankfully the drinks were a plenty to wash away any blues.
The singles draw threw up a number of interesting match ups. Both the boys trying to go 100% have tough games. Simmo against Toby in the lead off match and Prich coming up against the might of JG. For Colin to remain unbeaten he will have to overcome Copey in what may prove to be a fairly competitive game. Clacks will have to find some late form to beat new boy Piers to avoid his potential embarrassment. For obvious reasons, these games will be the highlight matches tomorrow but, as normal, the draw through up a number of nice match ups.
Wyn sadly will be absent for the singles as he has to get back across the border having only got a three day pass. Once again, Matt has been called on to bring in his replacement....and what a baptism of fire having drawn Kill. Woz has picked up an injury and may not be able to peg it up tomorrow.

Day 3 - ROW cruise to victory, OHA restore some pride
Woz failed his fitness test, first points to the OHA; right now they will take everything they can get.
As is the norm in recent Trevors, the final day was another tight affair. Over the past eight Trevors, there has only been one singles session that has been won by more than a point and three of these sessions have been tied including today. This, perhaps, highlights the deficiencies in the OHA performances during this period of relative domination by the ROW - quite simply they are struggling in the Pairs formats. How do they turn this around? Answers on a postcard please.
There were a few surprises within the matches. Firstly Simmo was finally tamed by a rampant Toby, thus failing to join the elite list of 100%ers. The first chance slips by for the ROW. Captain Jack completed a fine personal weekend by beating Jim far more comfortably than the form book suggested.
Then came the big game where Clacks not only lost a remarkable unbeaten winning streak that stretched back to the 2000 Trevor, but in doing so left Lincolnshire somewhat humbled as he became another to join the unwanted list of zero pointers The actual game was tight throughout, but new boy Piers proved that he was a more than adequate replacement to the mighty Sarge.
Next came the second ROW attempt to become a 100%er, but Prichy always had his work cut out against JG who withstood everything that the Welshaman threw at him to prevail on the 17th. The last unbeaten ROW player going into the singles also lost taking a bit of a hammering from Copey. Perhaps all these boys took their foot off the pedal a bit today - then again, knowing the nature of the beast I doubt that!!! It just, perhaps, proves how hard it is to put together three straight good day's of golf.
JR edged home against Kev followed by the resurgent Medsey taking out Nick by quite a margin. The next point for the ROW sealed the deal but with comfortable leads in the back two games, the overall win was never really in doubt. Joey toppled Grant for the solitary OHA win at the tail, Lethal, Matt and Mike all winning for the ROW.
All done and dusted, the ROW now take a two game lead in the overall series, 13-11. A couple of drinks after play with the presentation of the trophy to the successful Captain Jack. His shipmates have done him proud this weekend.

2021 Player Stats
Trevor's Summary
The figures below, once again, represent the dominance of the ROW over the weekend. Discounting Mike who stepped in just for the singles, there were nine ROW players from twelve that had better than 50% records over the weekend as compared to three for the OHA.
Kev was the only ROW player to record less than two wins. Contrast this with the OHA, 3 players that failed to record a win and only bringing home 1½ points.
Captain Jack certainly led from the front heading the ROW list and the next three boys did so much damage winning on days one and two, that their singles losses only hurt personal pride, but not team glory.
Looking from afar, it seems that the ROW are now very solid throughout the team with the vast majority playing more regular golf whilst the OHA now have almost half their team playing occasional golf at best. This makes it very difficult to turn up and perform well within the intensity of a Trevor battle. Many Hampton boys are returning to their respective homes needing a clear plan for the future on how to bring their game up to the required level to ensure a degree of parity for the future. Whilst the ROW will have enjoyed their victory, they also want a fight to do so - this is imperative for the future success of the Trevor. The OHA cannot expand like the GB&I team could do when bringing the Europeans into their flock after sustained USA dominance in the sister event that is the Ryder Cup.
It is now time for the Hampton Lion to show some teeth next year to stop this slide. Long live The Trevor!!!!

Welsh Wizard's Record Run EndsWyn extended his unbeaten Trevor record to 12 matches....but all good things come to an end.
A loss in the afternoon better ball on day one at Forest Pines ended this remarkable sequence that stretched back to day two at Trevor 2017. Four years of drinking from a very sweet winner's cup. |
ROW Late Reserve Takes Prized Singles ScalpClacks' incredible winning streak in the singles matches finally came to a halt losing out in a titanic battle to new boy, Piers Taverner.
Piers will go down in Trevor history with this win. Clacks run of thirteen straight wins covered a period of 19 years, a remarkable achievement that is unlikely to be matched. This completed a torrid weekend for the OHA skip. Not just coming up short in his attempts to wrest back the Trophy, but also, on a personal note, becoming only the ninth Trevorer in history to leave the weekend with zero points. Based on this form, Clacks will look to form a new boy band to submit his Eurovision entry for 2022. Footnote: Sorry mate, we all love you. LT |
