Trevor XI –2006, Bowood / Frilford Heath
The second half of the noughties led to a series of a new style Trevors with the exception of the return to Princes in 2008, the first of these in 2006. This style being off course accommodation with the golf played on different courses. Whilst an enjoyable interlude and it providing the opportunity to enjoy different golf courses, by the time the trevorers had experienced this for the third time in 2009, the general consensus was that they threw up more logistical issues and the daily travel to and from courses always meant a lot of rushing around and less free time between the golf.
This was particularly evident with this Trevor as the journey from the pub venue (next to Frilford Heath) to Bowood was a little longer than desired. (Fair to say a mistrevor from LT; his calcuations were a 30 minute drive while the reality was nearer to an hour!! - LT) Fortunately the trip only had to be made twice over the weekend.

Pre Trevor –Captaincy Catastrophe
Early availability, showing a number of big lifestyle changes for many trevorers, reduced the match to twelve a side.
The ROW team lost one of their major players who had previously not missed a Trevor due to the impending birth of a new child, Lethal declaring himself unavailable. His regular obbo, The Irritant, had married and then decided to emigrate to NZ with his new bride. It was questionable which team was more upset by his absence as Matt’s unique personality seemed to create equal unrest in both camps!! Sarge was now working in New York and unable to make the trip and Hippo was beset with injury problems, a poorly shoulder (maybe brought about by having to carry fellow ROW team mates at previous Trevors!! - LT).
So the ROW were four short that soon became three with the return of Kev having missed the 10th anniversary match at Saunton. Matt W managed to rustle up an unknown from The Marsh Harrier with the introduction of Kenny (he of the limp handshake!! - LT) to make up the numbers over the weekend and Prich introduced Jon Wheeler (a work colleague) who made the trip down for the day one better ball at Bowood (Jon, of course, has since become a Trevor regular – LT)
The OHA team’s problems were due to their overseas boys unable to make the trip in 2006 with both Oz boys absent. Normally not an issue, except a sad absence of two Trevor legends, but, of course, Jules was in situ with the armband; so his absence also meant a deputy had to be found to steer the rudderless ship back on course. Jules
decided on a man with experience and leadership skills and nominated the Headmaster, Jim Hooke, as captain.
Jim had a tough task ahead after the mauling the OHA took at Saunton, of course a much needed win for the ROW, their first victory in the 2000’s. Has the tide changed? Can the ROW level the series with the OHA currently leading 5½ - 4½.
So Trevor XI had two new captains, Dronny making his debut as leader for the ROW. Surely his great golfing brain coupled with a strong desire to win will make him a tough nut to crack??

ROW Edge Home on Day One
A bright sunny day at Bowood as everybody congregated at lunch
for the afternoon tee off for the day one better ball.
The OHA came out hot led by the two Jockos, both pairs having
strong wins. Indeed Jim showed no signs of captaincy nerves as paired with Clacks, he walloped his oppo skip in their match. But these two wins proved to be the only Hampton success on day one. In the other four games, all very tight, the ROW edged home in three with one match halved, two of their three victories going down the last.
One somewhat amusing pairing was the giant partnership of Sagey and Softers (has there been a bigger Trevor pairing? – LT) playing against OHA’s biggest offering of Saintly – but then came along the Wee Man to make up the group!! Poor Copey, somewhat dwarfed by his fellow trevorers – but if ever there was a man to deal with this vertical challenge, then he was the man!!
Better Ball Score: OHA 5 ROW 7

The evening at the pub provided a totally different Trevor atmosphere with no formal dinner arrangements and the players enjoying an al fresco evening in the garden on a balmy summer’s evening.
The first ever Trevor poker session broke out late in the evening, with not surprisingly, King Juan proving the king of the chips!!

Day Two - The Longest Day
Day two was played in glorious sunshine and with two 18 hole matches ahead followed by a meal at the Club at Frilford Heath, this would be one of the longest days in Trevor history. This would also be (by Trevor demand) the last time that we went this route in terms of requiring jacket and ties for the meal – thank god the official OHA skip was absent in the knowledge of his refusal to wear formal clothing at the Trevor!!
The day began with the Better Ball matches on the Blue course and the score line from day one was reversed to level up the match, even more amazingly the results almost mirrored day one. The ROW triumphed in matches one
and two, Kenny on his debut and partnered by his landlord had a superb win against one of Hampton’s strongest pairs, LT & Copey (perhaps as Oxford boys, home advantage played a part? - LT). The OHA managed to win three of the four remaining matches with one halved, Jim managing to continue his fine form with the armband, whilst Dronny maybe was struggling with the pressures of captaincy??

So the afternoon 18 hole greensomes would decide which team takes a lead into the final day? The answer was neither, as a tied session meant that going into the singles the overall match score was all square – a Trevor first.
In match one Prich and Softers were too strong for LT & Joey (this was LT’s first pointless day in Trevor history and with his next day loss in the singles, his first ever winless Trevor – LT). The Headmaster’s, paired again together after a strong morning showing, had a big win, the final two games provided a win for each side and two matches were halved.

With the match all square, never had a singles draw been so keenly anticipated. The equation was simple, whichever team won the singles would win the Trevor, of course, a tied singles day would mean the ROW retain the Trevor.
Past records suggested that the OHA may be slight favourites having generally shaded the singles over recent
years although the previous year threw up a tied singles session - everything suggested it was likely to be very
close!!

ROW Singles Glory
The last day never quite provided the anticipated drama. Although, at certain times during the day, the overall match got quite tight, there was always more ROW on the leader board than OHA.
The top six games were shared. The OHA skip maintained his 100% record with a fine win over the indefatigable Prichy (probably the only game difficult to forecast out of the top six, the rest all going to form.
Then the ROW took control led by their skip beating “Hampton’s Prich” (Copey) in his match, Jack defeating Saintly, Kenny maintaining his fine debut form and in the last match Big Dog defeating LT on the last hole to put the icing on the cake in front of his adoring fans!! Inevitably, “who let the dog out?” greeted the final putt dropping – probably a first for Bowood Golf Club!!!

So Trevor XI drew to a close, another sunny event throughout on two excellent courses.
The ROW victory, now two on the spin, levelled the series with the Trevor score now standing at 5½ - 5½.
The Headmaster in his role as stand-in captain, despite his own personal triumph, passed over the trophy to Dronny, successful in his inaugural year as captain.
Would Jules be back to try and turn the tide in 2007? Would Dronny be a 100% captain and the ROW take the lead
in the series?
All will be answered in the next episode of the Trevor!!

2006 Playing Stats
Trevor's Summary
Two 100% players, one from each side – Jim & Softers managing this rare occurrence and personal triumph.
Ironically the losing team the OHA also had two other unbeaten players, Toby & JG.
However, and more importantly, whilst every ROW player (except Jon who just played one game that he halved) won at least one game, four Hampton boys failed to turn up the party having a winless weekend.
Nick struggled off a tough handicap but did manage two halves, Joey sadly had a pointless weekend, but perhaps the biggest surprise was that two OHA “big guns”, LT & Copey failed to win a match. (LT struggled playing off his low Trevor handicap of 2 and hopes the “handicap committee may be a litle more generous in 2007 –LT!!).
The ROW debutants did extremely well, Kenny winning two of his three matches and Jon, as previously mentioned, getting a half in his only match. Kev also enjoyed a successful return to the fold.
The list below show the 2006 records for the players listed in order of % wins rather than points gained as these are so heavily weighted by a singles win. The points gained are in brackets (next to the % figure).
