Trevor XVIII, 2013 - East Sussex National
A return to East Sussex National (ESN) having previously visited in 2000, our last bad experience of shocking weather that led to the subsequent move to a summer event.
Since then ESN has undergone a major facelift with heavy investment both on and off the course. Furthermore a change in policy now allows play on the West Course, previously only for the members' play in 2000. A superb on site hotel allowing trevorers to park up their cars for the weekend, an arrangement enjoyed by all. The hotel is well appointed with nice, spacious rooms (a shower that will go down as the best ever Trevor shower - LT), good food and there are excellent leisure facilities to enjoy for the many trevorers that don't just retire to the bar straight after play!!

Pre Trevor
The earliest ever Trevor to book this event took place with the main reason being to try and prevent the selection issues experienced since 2006. This proved a good decision and one to follow for the future.
Furthermore a date change was necessary because of other rival major sporting events taking place on the normal Trevor weekend. This change did lead to problems for the ROW with Matt W and Jon W both being unavailable due to other commitments. Colin & Lethal had to pull out all the stops to get their pass approved for this weekend.
This potential problem was exacerbated once the two Jockos declared themself available meaning the OHA were back to full strength and the ROW therefore needed to get to 14 players.
The new ROW skip, Kev Davies, along with his team mates pulled out all the stops by enticing two regular trevorers to make a welcome return - Woz & Softers. Kev delved into the valleys and brought back Wyn who had previously made his one and only appearance in a triumphant ROW team at Bournemouth (2007).
Two new boys were introduced to complete the team, both serious golfers; Grant McGuff, a 9 handicap golfer
(introduced by Karlos) and Dave Barham, 8 handicap (introduced by Softers).
So by October all looked good - but once again selection issues raised their head on the ROW team. Firstly new boy Dave realised he had a diary clash and had to reluctantly withdraw, this issue resolved by some superb negotiating skills from new skip, Kev, who somehow managed to entice Matt W back into the fold (a very welcome return - LT).
Back to 14-a-side. Then Medsey withdrew late in 2012 (family commitments) and the process of finding another player started once again, and once again the ROW's newest regular team member somehow came up trumps.
Great kudos must go to Mrs Wheeler allowing her new hubby a two day pass with Jon in attendance days one and for part of day two before hot footing it home to celebrate the first anniversary of his nuptials. Captain Kev rustled up another debutant, Andy Nicholas, to replace Jon for the late afternoon greensomes and final day's singles match. So 14-a-side was finally confirmed in advance of the event - game on!! Once again, an ROW team selection saga, once again the boys pulled together - great trevoring skills LT.

Another important milestone was the launch of The Trevor website in April that created great excitement amongst the Trevor brethren and helped stir the juices for the 2013 event.
New Handicap Process
The “Trevor High Counsel”, after some intense trevoring, announced a new structure for the casual golfer to keep The Trevor in the forefront of matchplay golf events, particularly as the 2012 Ryder Cup made a pressing case to return to the number one spot!! The new system was devised to create a structured team handicap system that has clarity and transparency and also takes away the responsibility from the captains (Trevor Player Form Guide).

Day 1 - ROW "Sea of Blue" on record breaking day
An outstanding 10 OHA enjoyed the luxury of an early meet on the Thursday to play a practice round. Would this prove decisive - all will be revealed as the weekend unfolds or will they experience burn out??!! They were joined at the last minute by El Presidente, the sole ROW to take advantage of a practice round.
They were then joined by the other 4 OHA for a full complement for the pre Trevor festivities, along with 7 ROW early birds. An alternative evening was spent in a fantastic local hostelry, The Griffin Inn, where everybody enjoyed fine food, some good local ales and plenty of early Trevor bonhomie. Kudos to Dronny for recommending such a fine example of a country pub.
Nightcaps were taken back at the hotel before retiring in readiness for the start of battle the following morning. The ROW skip was there to meet all the returning boys and the much anticipated draw for the morning greensomes was announced before retiring to bed. The Trevor juices were now flowing!!!
In the morning, the players all convened for the pre Trevor briefing before heading to the excellent practice facilities to fine tune their games prior to the start of the 2013 event. The morning matches were nine hole greensomes played on the back nine holes of the East Course.

The ROW came out flying with a hot start, their best ever, to record a 5-2 lead, only Leafy & Hoody sparing the OHA blushes with a win in the final game; indeed without these boys flying the OHA flag, this could have been the first ever Trevor session when the OHA failed to record a win. In most games, the ROW led from start to finish, although mention should go to Lethal & Softers who won the final two holes to snatch a dramatic half.

The ROW nailed home their hot morning start with another crunching session win by 11-3 leaving the day one match score with the OHA already facing a mountain to climb trailing 16 points to 5. This is undoubtedly the ROW's best ever first day!! Fortunately for the OHA, their Antipodean connection provided the only crumb of comfort, both Jules & Rich being unbeaten on the day: that said Rich did question his (& his partners) ability to close out a game having halved both games when two up with two to play in the morning and four up with five to play in the afternoon!!!
Sadly Killer had a day to forget going into the record books with the maximum loss in the greensomes (5&4) then followed by being a part of the heaviest ever loss in a better ball match in Trevor history. Obviously the rigours of parenting are having a detrimental effect on a normally stoical and solid trevorer in pairs golf!! The chief tormentor of Kill was Colin who will feel fresher than most on day two having only had to play 17 out of a possible 27 Trevor holes!!
New boy Grant had a 100% day one record (perhaps another Trevor first - LT), astounding all his fellow competitors with his ball striking. Sarge played some special golf in his match culminating with a chip in to win on 17 and Matt W had a hot final five holes to grab a half from the jaws of defeat in his game. Basically all the ROW players fired throughout the day, sadly the OHA were unable to meet fire with fire!!!
A suitably convivial evening was enjoyed by all, the ROW lauding it up after their memorable day, the OHA drowning their sorrows. Prichy, as ever, provided some excellent team teasers, the draw for the morning better ball was completed and players gradually retired in readiness for the day two battle; the OHA will need a strong day to keep this contest alive.

Day 2 - Deadlock Day leaves ROW in Control
The OHA restored some pride and order, but failed to reduce the match deficit on a day when both sessions were shared. For the first time in Trevor history, games were abandoned when in play due to late afternoon thunder and lightning activity; four games were completed, three defaulted to halved matches.
This leaves the over all match score at ROW 26½ - OHA 15½. This means the ROW need a paltry 4½ wins out of 14 in the singles to win back the trophy they last held in 2010, conversely the OHA require 10 singles victories to snatch an improbable win.
Jon departed after the better ball matches returning home to celebrate his first wedding anniversary, replaced by a second ROW debutant, Andy Nicholas; poor Andy arrived to play in the rain after two days of sun and to make things worse, also lost his match.
One new trevor seen for the first time in history, and welcomed by all, was the introduction of nearest the pin prizes during the better ball session. Two OHA veterans (JG & Softers) had got together, agreed to sponsor the prizes and organised the competitions on the quiet. For information, the two inaugural winners were Clacks (3rd) and Woz (8th).

By all accounts, this was an incredibly hard fought session, four games going up the final hole. At the top, two matches were shared, Prichy "turned up" and along with fellow Celt, Sarge proved to strong for the "Barmy Boys".
LT & Joey squeaked home winning two of the final three holes and Jules held an incredible 30 footer on the last for a half in his match!!! This putt kept the OHA "Antipodeans" unbeaten record going into the singles, the ROW, though, have many unbeaten big guns, Dronny, Lethal, Softers and Sarge, the latter with a 100% win record. Will Sarge become the first 100%er since 2007 (Woz) - he will require a big singles win against LT to achieve this rarely achieved accolade. All will be revealed after the singles tomorrow!!! ....and yes, Karlos, is also unbeaten going into the singles!!!
On the flip side, every ROW player has a win to their name, whilst 5 OHA still have to win - Toby, JG, Saint, Nick & Kill, the latter staring a 100% loss record in the face. Can Kill turn the tide in the singles??

Normal Trevor activity in the evening with a late dinner, more Prichy teasers, although there was great controversy as the maestro quiz master seemed to have had one too many as he announced the results. The team positions in the quiz were not changed just once, but twice(!!) as Prichy got into a real pickle. Chaos ensued with one team suffering the ignominy of originally being announced as last, to then experience elation as a revised count suddenly leap-frogged them into the gold medal position!! This caused great consternation with the ousted winners demanding a third re-count, and they were duly reinstated as winners. No quiz team in trevor history has ever finished in three different positions in the same quiz!!! Poor Prichy was inconsolable at his mis-trevoring!!!
Fines were presented this year by Softers & Jules, followed by the much anticipated singles draw and the associated "Trevorcast". The more sober players retired in readiness for the final day "mano a mano" battle, whilst JG fell on his sword for the OHA by entertaining as many ROW players into the wee small hours in an attempt to damage their chances the following day. A brave, but what proved futile act of individual heroism!!

Day 3 - ROW Day in the Sun Completes Comprehensive Win
The OHA knew the task ahead of them was going to be a tough assignment when they spotted a certain Matt W on the range warming up for his singles battle ahead - has he ever even seen a driving range??!! - LT
There were times throughout the day that it looked like the OHA, with strong finishes in a few close games, may push the result to a close finish. However the majority of these games turned in the favour of the ROW resulting in a singles session victory by 7½ matches to 6½ (15-13 points). Leafy, LT, Saint & Joey all held leads after nine holes but strong resistance from their ROW competitors saw a momentum shift on the back nine. Similarly JG was having a close match with Matt W before he produced a back nine blitz of scratch golf, the second time he had done so over the weekend.
In the first ever all captain's match, Toby managed to defeat Kev, Clacks maintained his supreme singles record with a win against an in form Lethal, Copey struggled against the mighty hitting of Grant, Nick edged home against Wyn, and Jim managed to rally late to win a tight match against Jack. Woz played a different kind of "safe golf" and by doing so managed to take out Saintly and remarkably (his word - LT) remain unbeaten for the weekend.
There were some big victories with the lower handicap player inflicting said punishment on their less experienced opponent. Softers maintained an unbeaten record and by beating Jules prevented him from his first unbeaten Trevor. Similarly Rich's win against Karl meant he remained unbeaten and Karl did not. Kill got his second singles win and by doing so scored his first points over the weekend. Kill did point out later that he waits for that elusive win against a regular trevorer, both his triumphs being against late stand in players - LT.
Finally Prich proved far too strong for Hoody who will be seeking "singles counselling" after two crushing defeats in two years.

Therefore the overall match score was 41½ - 28½, a truly comprehensive victory. As with the 2012 event at Goodwood, the match result was pretty well decided after day one, with the subsequent two days being a closely fought contest. Hopefully in 2014, both teams will arrive with their "games" for a tight battle over all three days.
After proceedings, LT re-confirmed the details about TT XIX to be played at Forest Pines golf resort asking for all players to confirm attendance using the new "online confirmation form" on the website.
Prichy announced the Trevorcast results, this year a five way tie with only 9 of the 14 matches predicted correctly.
The OHA skipper Toby handed over the trophy to the victorious ROW skip, Kev who graciously accepted on behalf of his team. The ROW victory means that there is now only one game between the teams in the match result standings, the OHA holding this slender lead by 9½ matches to 8½.
Toby then announced his successor as Joey who will surely start an early trevor to plot a way back for the OHA in 2014.
The venue proved a great success and confirmed that an on site offering makes the whole weekend more seamless. The two courses were excellent, the hotel facilities just right and the service from the staff was generally as good as it gets. Certainly the bag storage facility was a great additional extra, not having to trudge back to hotel rooms with clubs and batteries was greatly welcomed.
As always with the Trevor, a few minor tweaks may be implemented in 2014 to further enhance the weekend - plenty of trevoring ahead!!!
Bring on 2014!!!!
The Handicap Review for 2013 has now been completed (as per the new system introduced - LT) with the revised starting handicaps for 2014 detailed on Starting Handicaps 2014.

2013 Player Stats
Trevor's Summary
The return of ROW stalwarts, Woz, Matt & Softersmade a big difference as the brand of golf these boys offer is perfect for the matchplay format; they may not be ever consistent, but do produce spells of magic within a round.
Sarge continued to show great Trevor form and duly became the first player to have a 100% record since Woz in his halcyon days back in 2007. Whilst there were no unbeaten trevorers in 2012, the ROW also had three players unbeaten in 2013, along with Mr 100%er, those being two returning players Softers & Woz and Dronny back to his best. Hopefully he can return to his club and work on his club handicap, it just seems so strange to see a golfer of Dronny's quality with a two figure handicap against his name. I know that is what he is striving to do - LT.
Richard flew the "unbeaten" flag for the OHA with a welcome return to form after, what he would describe as a "patchy warm up", but sadly with an imminent return back to OZ, he is not guaranteed to return in 2014. Let's all keep fingers crossed on that one, after all he is a Trevor legend!! - LT.
Remarkably our two highest handicappers, Jules & Karl went into the singles unbeaten, but both suffered big losses to miss out on what would have been the most remarkable of achievements.
New boy Grant won four from five matches and proved to be an extremely valuable acquisition to their team.
On the down side, for the second year running Saint failed to win a match, as did JG who kept coming up against opponents who went on "hot streaks". Maybe their juices are stirred by the prospect of taking such a scalp? - LT.
Ten of the ROW team had records better than 50%, only three OHA; this statistic showed the dominance the ROW enjoyed throughout the weekend.
The points table below shows the details in the normal format (tied records listed alphabetically):
