Trevor XVII, 2012 - Goodwood
Glorious Goodwood!!! The venue and weekend lived up to this known phrase. It is doubtful whether we have stayed in a nicer hotel with better service and the weather was probably the best weekend to date in this disappointing summer.
The main Downs course provided an excellent test of golf providing awe inspiring views of the West Sussex countryside right down to the English Channel at Chichester. The hotel course was more than adequate for the nine hole greensomes matches.

Pre Trevor
The Trevor, in recent times, wouldn’t be the Trevor without team selection problems, once again, the ROW being beset with a number of issues. Thanks, though, through the great efforts of their skip, Sarge, we arrived at the event with a twelve-a-side match.
Early doors Clacks had declared himself unavailable and JG then, very unselfishly fell on his sword once it became apparent that the teams would only be twelve. Certainly at this time the OHA boys were fearing the worst without the might of the two Jockos in attendance. That fear proved to be unnecessary once the event finally unfolded!! This was the first year since 1997 without a Jocko in residence.
Sadly three key ROW stalwarts, Woz, Softers and Matt W were unavailable all for family reasons, putting the ROW behind the eight ball at this early stage. We all hope that these boys see the light and make a welcome return in 2013 – they were all sorely missed, although, as things transpired, we did manage to pull in Softers for a day to fill a hole.
Congratulations to Woz on the birth of his two new twins, fittingly born on a “Trevor reunion day” when the boys welcomed back a long lost Trevor friend, Gazza, for a cheeky 18 at Effingham. Jon Wheeler was also unavailable – something to do with a wedding!!
The only OHA issue was the absence of Rich on day one, still on hols with his family but this base was covered with the introduction of new, young blood with Jim Suds, making his Trevor debut, in attendance for day one.
Sarge managed to fill his only space with another Trevor debutant, Justin - always good to welcome a new name to the fold but the ROW were still one short. As the event drew nearer, and despite considerable efforts to find a twelfth man, a revolutionary decision became the only solution - a Trevor first. As previously reported, Sarge had managed to pull in Softers for day one and then young Jim Suds was to transfer teams to become the first (and we hope last) trevorer to represent two teams at the same Trevor. We were now 12-a-side – game on!!
All seemed well, then in early July, Sarge chasing up his late payers (may I say they were very few this year – thank you LT) was informed by Big Dog that he was unavailable. How could he fill this late gap? A very speculative email to his list of non-attendees resulted in a remarkable late shout from Jon (and of course his very understanding wife to be!) that he could be there for the weekend. Big kudos to Jon with his nuptials only a week post Trevor!!
So finally we had a full compliment. The handicaps were completed, again a Trevor first, via telephone with the two skips many miles apart and we were ready for the off. Then a final bombshell with a late email from Jack; thankfully his family matter resolved itself and the final Trevor scare was averted.

Hot Hampton explode on Day 1
Seven OHA boys had booked in the night before, the skip finally arriving after a tortuous seven hour drive to Goodwood. Perhaps this early familiarisation assisted with the fast start?
The rest of the Trevor flock descended down early doors on Saturday morning, all on time for the Trevor briefing and battle duly commenced. Trevor XVII was underway!!
With the weather set fair, the new OHA skipper, the newly named "Principal", Toby had the privilege in hitting the first shot in the morning greensomes and two hours later the Hampton boys sat around at lunch reflecting on an amazing morning’s work with 5 victories. equalling the biggest ever Trevor greensomes winning margin.
In the top game, the Hampton teaching fraternity saw off a strong ROW pairing. In match two involving the two Trevor debutants, OHA built an early three shot lead and then held strong to secure their point.
Matches three to five were all close games, Hampton managing to squeeze wins in all three. Fit again Kev (good
to see you back) playing alongside Karlos played flawless greensomes golf for the most emphatic win of the morning for the ROW preventing a whitewash.
Greensomes Scores: OHA 5 ROW 1

The afternoon better ball, played on the challenging Downs Course saw the OHA take further strides to retain the Trevor. The session was another emphatic showing that increased their lead further; a very commanding
position after day one that will require the ROW to come out firing day two to try and bridge the gap.
Match one went down to the last putt with LT managing an up and down on the last to win the 18th and secure a
half after another strong showing from Jack in the better ball ably supported by his skip, Sarge. (What does Jack need to do to secure a well-deserved win in this format having played his socks off for the past two years??!! - LT)
In match two, OHA skip and Nick squeezed home against ROW “new boys” Colin & Jon. A mighty Welsh pairing had a convincing win in game three, the ROW’s only afternoon success. Match four was, on paper, a definite shock fittingly completed by a magnificent birdie from Jim on the tough 17th hole. The OHA cruised home in match five and eked out a win in the final pairing.

So at the end of day one, Sarge was left shell shocked, maybe bemused as to why the OHA had secured such a big
lead. Certainly, the OHA boys were as equally surprised as their under-cooked preparation suggested that a slow start was on the cards.
One positive for the ROW was the impressive form of Kev returning for the frst time in five years after his ghastly long-term injury. Welcome back Kev!!
After a flying visit for the day, we bade farewell to Softers (until 2013!) and welcomed Rich as he hot footed it down to
Goodwood having returned from his family hols. As part of this process, Trevor history was made as young Jim Sudbury was “transferred” from the OHA to the ROW team, an emotional time for all; a ceremony hosted by Jules befitted such an auspicious moment in the event’s history!!
Prich provided his usual brain teasers for everybody to enjoy over dinner (a team competition a triumph for the ROW!!) and day one closed with the Hampton boys retiring to prepare their already weary limbs for tomorrow’s battle. The ROW flew their colours by moving onto the “late bar” to lick their wounds, whilst at the same time, entertaining the wedding party in attendance!!

Parity Restored
Day two was played in glorious sunshine and two keenly fought sessions were shared.
The format was reversed starting with the better ball matches on the Downs. In match one a dynamic Prich baby sat the ROW “transfer debutee” Suds to a big win. The Hampton veterans, Kill & Jim dethroned Kev and his partner Justin. Definitely a Trevor first here – shots taken off Kill!!
Match three was a battle between the two skips with Sarge & Medsey beating the strong OHA pairing of Toby & Copey. A fresh Rich, playing alongside the dynamic Hoody had a good win in match four against a strong ROW
pairing, the ROW cruised home in match five, Hampton in match six –Colin & Karlos losing for the first time as a pair
after many successful years.
Only one of the twelve better ball games, the first, went down the 18th hole.
Better Ball Score: OHA 6 ROW 6

In the afternoon greensomes, Sarge was hoping for as big a turn round as in The Open (Well done Ernie - and amazingly played on the same weekend as the Trevor!! - LT) to try and bridge the gap before the final day’s singles matches. The session, though, was shared.
Hoody continued his fine form with a big win with Jules and went into the singles as the only player with a 100% record. (The remarkable thing here, and this shows the way fortunes change so easily in The Trevor, Hoody failed to win a match only the previous year in 2011 - LT). Kill remained unbeaten!! Surely he can secure his second Trevor singles win on the back of this form??!!
On the down side, and sorry boys for trevoring this, two ROW boys remained pointless (surprisingly Colin and debutant Justin being another new boy succumbing to the “pressures of the Trevor”).
The ROW showed their mettle holding on to win their three games that all went up the 9th hole.
Another Trevor record – 6 shots allowance for a nine hole match in game four (and they just proved to be enough!).
Greensomes Score: OHA 3 ROW 3

This big lead meant the following equations:
The ROW needed to win the singles 8½ - 3½ (17-7) for a tie but to prevent the OHA from retaining the
Trevor, an unprecedented 9 wins. A tough ask!!!! The OHA needed four wins (8 pts) to win the Trevor.
An enjoyable evening was had by all in an excellent private dining room. More Prichy brain teasers followed by LT’s
Trevor “Olympic Quiz” and a good ol’ session – even the Hampton boys managed to stay up on this evening!! Joey reported that he was the last OHA to bed, but fair to say, the ROW proved, once again, that they remain the “best in bar”. Oh to be young again!!

Moore Trevor History after Olympian Performance!!
There it is– after 17 years, King Juan finally broke his official singles duck (he had previously beaten Leafy in an "extra singles" in Bournemouth, 2007, but this was not an official singles - LT). Not only that he beat the OHA 100% boy, Hoody – not only that he trounced him 7&6!! Karl received a standing ovation from all the Trevor flock back in the clubhouse and now all “regular trevorers” have a singles victory under their belt.
What of the other games? The OHA skip fronted up and, as the score sheet showed, was always in command against Medsey. Match two was a titanic see-sawing match with Kev finally overcoming one of his nemesis players, sneaking home against Rich after a late charge.
LT gained revenge for his loss two years ago against Lethal, the match a little closer than the score reflects (as with many games, a few key putts made the difference). Joey turned around his game against Justin having got off to the slowest of starts (that will teach you for being the last in the bar!! - LT).
Then a series of big wins for the ROW followed, winning the next five matches. Jack had a great win beating Copey,
another revenge win having also played and lost to Copey at Slaley Hall last year. Sarge played very solid golf to dismantle Leafy, similarly Prich against Jules.
Sadly Kill couldn’t follow up his form with a singles victory losing heavily to a very hot Jon– and then came the remarkable Karlos win (previously reported).
Then another Trevor singles “shock”, indeed the match winning point was secured by Nick comfortably beating an out of sorts Dronny who probably had his poorest Trevor in history in terms of results. One thing is for sure, he will come back with all guns blazing in 2013.
The ever reliable Jim Hooke beat Colin in match ten and in the final match, a game sponsored by Rizla+, the Trevor
fittingly closed with a squared match.
So the ROW won the singles session 6½ - 5½ (13-11), indeed they just outscored the OHA on days two and three combined. Oh, for a faster start and who knows what the result would have been!!

So Trevor XVII drew to a close, another great year with many memorable moments. Once again, the weather was kind with no rain and sunshine throughout. Indeed the best weekend to date in 2012. An excellent venue, where the service at both the hotel and course were probably as good as we have ever received.
Remarkably we avoided too many “hurry ups” from the marshals during the weekend (although I must admit our group was guilty of this in our singles – sorry guys!!, LT). Unbelievably we actually received a well done on our speed of play on one occasion – surely a Trevor first??!!
The trophy was duly presented to new OHA skipper Toby from outgoing ROW captain Sarge. The overall match score is now OHA 9 ½ ROW 7 ½
Kev, now back in the fold and fit again, was nominated by Sarge to become the new ROW skipper, a popular choice – such a lovely, lovely boy!! (ref: “It Ain’t Half Hot Mum” – LT)
The OHA will look forward to doing battle with the ROW in 2013 under their new tutelage; Kev will pull out all the stops
to bring back the trophy. Hopefully, the key missing names in 2012 will be back to strengthen their team and turn the tide back the ROW way.
Bring on 2013!!

2012 Player Stats
Trevor's Summary
Let’s be fair, the famous quotation, “there are lies, damned lies & statistics” (Mark Twain) is never truer than when representing the Trevor results .
So many things govern success. You could play great in a pair and your partner not come to the party, you may both play great but just come up against a greater “irresistible force”.
The same may be said of the singles and the draw is key here.
There were no unbeaten trevorers in 2012.
The two pointless players both came from the ROW - surprisingly Colin, and debutant Justin struggled throughout.
Another surprise after recent success for the OHA was the fact that Saint failed to win a match.
Nick and Hoody topped the OHA % win table – I am sure you can see where I am coming from guys, but who would have trevored that!! Similarly has Karlos ever had a Trevor record in excess of 50%??
Only two games out of 24 went up the 18th hole on the Downs course –ironically the first and last matches!!
The Welsh contingent (a band of four) for the ROW accounted for 60% of their points – Kev, based on these figures, you may have to search through the valleys to complete your 2013 team!!!
The points table below shows the details in the normal format:
