Trevor XIII, 2008 – Return to Princes
Princes became the first venue to feature for a second time in Trevor Trophy history, nine years since the first outing on these hallowed links.
The difference being that, as we all soon discovered, a summer event after a wet spring, meant that the rough was considerably thicker than the early spring event back in 1999. Finding the short stuff became the main priority.
This, coupled with some blustery conditions throughout, and everybody found this to be a testing Trevor.
After three years with an 18, 36, 18 hole formula, the three loops of nine that Princes offered allowed a return to
the preferred 27, 27, 18 hole Trevor, particularly for the old timers!! Similarly we were back to a one course Trevor.

Trevor XIII, 2008 – Return to Princes
Pre Trevor
The “modern” era would not be the same without serious team selection issues and once again 2008 was no exception. Eventually for the second year running we had to settle for an odd number, this time 13-a-side. Obviously we always want to accommodate everybody available, but the general consensus after two years of odd numbers that this should not be repeated in the future – it is essential to keep numbers even.
The new OHA skipper, Kill had less problems with his team as only Rich failed to make the trip from Oz this year. Jules was particularly excited having missed the original Princes event.
The same could not be said of ROW skipper Medsey who experienced numerous issues exacerbated by the late withdrawal of himself due to a broken finger (playing a game of 20-20 cricket, a poor mistrevor - it's a young man's game Medsey - LT)
The third consecutive year where a captaincy issue raised its head - the OHA requiring a stand-in skip in 2006, ROW 2007 and now this problem.
Medsey showed some true Trevor spirit by still attending the event as the first ever non-playing captain in Trevor history – top man!
Kev Davies was out with his aforementioned long-term injury (only returning fit four years later in 2012 - LT), Big Dog was also unavailable resulting in Colin Nicholson making his Trevor debut (an excellent addition to the fold - LT).
Medsey's place was filled by Matt twisting the arm of another Marsh Harrier local at the eleventh hour, the lively and somwhat eccentric Darren making his only Trevor appearance,
Kill, of course, was relishing the role of captaincy, particularly delighted to do so on his preferred home for golf, that being a Links course. Did he know that Trevor history was against him? The previous two Trevors played on the links had gone the way of the ROW (Princes 1999 & Saunton 2005).
Somehow, yet again, despite late adversity, equal numbers on each team had been arrived at and it was game on.

OHA Shade Day One with Afternoon Comeback
A gentle start with the morning golf, the nine hole greensomes. The
ROW dominated this session. Indeed the OHA were thankful for a singles win
from a fired up JG smarting after his surprisingly poor 2007 performance, as the ROW won four and halved another of the six greensomes matches.
Bucking a long-standing Trevor trend, the two ROW debutants won both their matches – so much for the pressure of the Trevor!!

In the afternoon four balls, skipper Medsey turned back the clock with a couple of classic Trevor pairings formed at TT1 – sadly this move backfired as the partnerships of Woz & Sarge and Prich & Dronny were both beaten. That
said, a perennialy strong OHA pairing of Clacks & Copey played all day without a win.
Leafy gained revenge for his morning defeat to Colin by beating in him the singles match – was it fair for a Trevor debutant to have Leafy in his ear on his lonesome for three plus hours??!!
The OHA’s successful afternoon gave them a slender lead at the end of day one.
One possible new Trevor, certainly where moden records were available, Karlos was unbeaten on day one!!

Groundhog Day
Day two almost mirrored day one. The ROW, once again, stormed away with the greensomes in the morning, a session only improved thanks to the Wee Man having a wonderful singles win against the might of Woz.
Four of the six matches went down the last but for Jules & Joey, they suffered the ignominy of that rare occurrence, a 5&4 crushing in a 9 hole match.
The OHA just shaded the afternoon better ball, this time the ROW broke their extra singles duck with Lethal comfortably beating Toby (a result to be repeated the next day in the singles – LT).
Four of the six games went down the last, a rare session occurrence in the better ball format. Two of these games were halved, the OHA edged the other two games.
Throughout the day, eight of the twelve pairs matches had gone down the last hole, a testament of how closely fought the first two days had been. Little did we know what was just around the corner in the singles??!!
These results meant that the OHA will take a slender lead into the singles in their attempt to win back the Trevor for the first time since 2004 and level the overall Trevor series.

For the second day the ROW proved the stronger team in the greensomes format. However OHA winning the better ball meant that honours were shared through the day, although the ROW actually won more matches.
Overall Score OHA 22 ROW 20
This has left the scores very tight going into the singles with just one match separating the teams. The equation
was that the OHA need to share the singles to win back the Trevor, whilst the ROW need seven wins out of 13 to tie and retain the Trevor.
The evening singles draw saw a team captain change the format of a day’s play without actually discussing this matter with LT!!
“Killergate” and his shock announcement as the draw took place that the singles will be played off full allowance created shock waves and consternation amongst the flock and great distress to LT himself. The matter was eventually resolved and the full allowance will now be set in stone– ie The Trevor will follow the rules as per the recommendations of CONGU; no event can be bigger than the rules!!
Yes it was the right way forward as it does help open the door of opportunity for the higher handicap players as early
records showed dominance from the lower handicappers in the singles - but just the wrong way to get there!!

Captain Courageous’ Win stimulates Hampton Tidal Wave
When the draw came out the “Trevorcast” could not separate the teams, but this was thrown on its head as it turned out to be a day to forget for the ROW with only two wins and nine losses. So much so that Prichy will be looking long and hard as to whether the trevorcast, normally such a reliable source, returns in 2009!!!
But when the singles includes Kill getting his inaugural win after 12 years of trying, perhaps it was inevitable that the OHA would triumph on such an auspicious day.
It would be great to write poetically on how well the skip played, the reality being that his opponent, Darren was
struggling with a bad back and could hardly swing a club - but this physical affliction of Darren's was no worse than the mental scars that Kill had when it comes to Trevor singles golf!!
In the other maches there were some surprise results and some amazing turnarounds. Joey took out Dronny, Hoody defeated Matt W and both Jules & Saint, against highly rated ROW opposition, both recovered from considerable deficits at halfway to get good halves.
The two ROW victories were recorded by Lethal repeating his win against Toby on day two and in the battle of the big
guns (the lowest ever handicap singles match – LT) Sagey comfortably outgunned LT with a superb display of controlled, yet powerful links golf.

One of those freak days that resulted in a comfortable win for the OHA after two days of really closely fought golf.
Explain that??!!
Medsey handed the Trevor to a delighted Hampton captain resplendent in his OHA blazer. The series has been levelled once again, tied 6½ - 6½ and Kill had stopped the ROW charge of three consecutve wins.
After two years in office, Medsey stood down and announced that Karlos will be the new ROW skipper.
