TREVOR 2018
Trevor XXII, 2018 - Princes
Having received a special invitation from the golf club to be a part of their opening year celebrations for the revamped nine holes on the Himalaya course, the Trevor High Counsel accepted said invitation to this famous links on the Kent coastline.
Consequently, for the second year running, Princes became a host venue for the magnificent celebration of matchplay golf that is the Trevor Trophy for the third time, having previously hosted in 1999 and 2008.

Pre Trevor
The two skips Hoody and the newly appointed ROW Grant set about assembling their teams. Although Hoody just fell short last year, the dressing room remained right behind this likeable and loyal leader, Grant having players queuing up to represent the ROW machine, now having not tasted the sour taste of defeat since 2012.
Early stirrings suggested the teams might expand to an unprecedented 16-a-side with some veteran past trevorers throwing their name in the hat. Finally only one firmed up with the return of Hamptonian Trevor legend, Gazza making his first event since his move to the other side of the world. In sport the word legend is often used when not quite merited, but in this case it is; lest we forget it was in Gazza's flat way back in the day when the embryonic Hudson Challenge was laid down, then the Trevor Trophy evolved after this event. Who knows, but maybe without that rite of passage that so many of us enjoyed at Hudson House, the Trevor may never have happened?
Overall logistics eventually led to 14-a-side being the finalised numbers. For Grant with Colin and Lethal available again, the debutant of 2017 Simmo was sadly benched after his successful inaugural year, and with Jon pulling out for family reasons, their team was soon finalised.
For Hoody, with Gazza a given for selection and Suds back in the picture, the initial OHA squad to pick from was 16. A potential headache for the skip. Then the Headmaster declared himself unavailable with the dates clashing with a long booked commitment and the Saint did what the Saint does by standing down to allow his younger brother to play.
As things turned out later in the piece, having a "bench" player proved very opportune as Buster announced that a work commitment clashed with the Trevor, withdrawing just a month before the event. And with Saint on fire in 2017, what a substitute to fill his boots, many would say the team being strengthened based on last year's form of both these players.
So the teams were finalised...hopefully with no late dramas to unfold. Time for battle in late July!!
Then at the last minute, new ROW captain McGuff announced that he would employ a squad system after a late pull out from Trevor stalwart, Matt W as sadly his work commitments had to take precedence. The mighty Simmo was immediately drafted in to replace him, in Trevor history there has never been a stronger sub - for the elder amongst us, their David Fairclough, or for the slightly younger Ole Gunner!! But with Kev potentially still suffering with his long-term injury, Jon Wheeler, now available for some of the weekend, was added to the squad allowing the ROW the luxury of picking from 15 on a daily basis to suit. Such a luxury for the new skip!!
Finally the Trevor was back on the UK links, indeed the last foray being a day at Ashburnham in 2009 but the last full Trevor was at Princes now 10 years ago. With two events here before and with one win a piece, who will be the master at Princes in 2018?
England, indeed the whole UK has been roasting in hot, dry weather. Which team will adapt best to what will be the ultimate links test on fast, baked fairways? Many perhaps will never have played in conditions that they will face this weekend. That is just another challenge that The Trevor throws up.
A select few arrived early on Friday lunchtime for a practice round, as always those with less work and family commitments with the rest arriving in Dodge in readiness for the 10.00pm prompt briefing. (The new hard nosed management regime adopted having realised that "tough love" is the only way to organise the current Trevor flock - LT)
The eagerly anticipated draws for day one took place at the meeting, then duly trevored in full in the bar with each team bullish about their chances, confidence bolstered by alcoholic intake at this late time of night. Game on!!

Day 1 - ROW weather storm to sneak early lead
Greensomes Scores: OHA 3 ROW 4
So the Trevor set off with greensomes matches on the newly revamped Himalayas nine in very breezy conditions.
An upset with the bookies in game one with a strong OHA pair losing, but this was soon balanced by an OHA win, perhaps also against the odds, with the mighty Simmo & Jack partnership falling short, particularly as in recent years Leafy has always been slow out of the blocks on day one.
Match three was halved as was match six, but in a morning of surprises Lethal & Wyn took out the mighty pairing of Copey & JG, equalled by a new OHA pairing of Nick & Suds convincingly beating the long-term ROW stronghold of Prich & Woz. The session decider came down to the last match with, arguably, this comfortable ROW win being the only match that went entirely to form. This win resulted in the ROW taking a slim lead into the afternoon four balls.

An afternoon of comfortable wins see sawing from one team to the other until the final match that went all the way finishing all square to leave the session score tied.
In match one, Dronny leading from the front today, obviously fired up having read about his poorer form in recent years in the newly posted Trevor pairs records. A true Trevor legend, being able to respond on the course with two wins on day one. The ROW also triumphed in game two with a Cowbridge pairing winning convincingly on the course - as indeed they will do against their partners in the bar later!!
Matches three and four were traded with a big win for JR & Karlos, but this was nothing to the hammering that was handed out in match six. Jules & Nicky Boy versus Lethal & Sarge now added into the Trevor record books equalling the biggest ever winning margin for a four ball match... and yes, amazingly, it was the OHA pair triumphing. Arguably the size of this result being the biggest ever Trevor upset??
Suds completed a successful day alongside the Saint, also unbeaten today, this being the third OHA win to square up the session.

Overall Score: OHA 10 ROW 11
The end of a tight and, by the time the last match finished, long day. All to play for on day two, the matches reversed tomorrow starting with better balls in the morning. The OHA were hoping for a fast start to take a day one lead in the knowledge that only twice before has a day one lead been reversed, and on one of these occasions this only resulted in a tied Trevor. Perhaps the time to buck this trend?
And a day of surprises for sure. Who would have said that 100%ers would be Karlos & Wyn for the ROW, Nicky Boy & Suds for the OHA?? Not many for sure. Leafy upset his own day one form book by winning both his matches, and as previously mentioned, Dronny doing so for the ROW.
The captains, as is often the case, when having to deal with the pressures of leadership are yet to record a win, with just a half to their names. Speaking of halves, Disco & Colin will be the most tired golfers out there having been paired all day, halving both matches thereby playing all 36 holes. Will this have any affect on their game over the next two days?
And then those with less good fortunes, again highlighting the haphazard nature that Trevor matches throw up. The mighty OHA Jockos, (our "links experts" and trump cards as reported by skip Hoody - LT), both suffered two losses, as indeed did returning legend Gazza. All three will be fired up to reverse fortunes tomorrow for sure. Similarly an ROW legend, Woz, will be wanting to get himself going on day two, as will Prichy, not without a point, but without a win.
So many with so much to prove, so many with the chance to cling onto a Trevor weekend beyond their wildest expectations. What will day two bring?
The evening revelry was full of fun, banter with a good modicum of alcohol consumed.
Karlos' evening culminated a successful day for him with the ultimate moment of personal joy with his induction into the Trevor Hall of Fame (HoF). Such a worthy new member to this illustrious group. Over the years, there is no trevorer who has offered more one line quotes during any weekend (his "the pressure of the Trevor" remains in folk lore for ever - LT). There has definitely never been a trevorer to over-trevor result forecasting like he has, this alone encapsulating so much of what the Trevor stands for. Popular with both teams on and off the course, a worthy addition into the HoF.
He was joined into the roll of honour by Kill, a Trevor veteran, in age and also as another original cast member from the Hudson Challenge, the precursor to the Trevor. Only missing one Trevor due to ill health in year two, Kill remains an integral part of the Trevor on and off the course and was duly rewarded with his HoF cap by the High Counsel.

Day 2 - OHA edge into lead into singles
Better Ball Score: OHA 8 ROW 6
OHA came out firing day two with the top two pairings, skippered by the teams' adopted Scottish friends, both coming to the party suitably chastened after a poor opening day, beating two strong ROW pairs.
Kev and Lethal proved too strong for the "young" (well young for the OHA!! - LT) pairing of captain Hoody with the previously unbeaten Suds. An old established Hampton pair, Copey & Disco returned the third OHA win, and in match five Karlos, with Softers guiding him around, continued his fine form to date with another win. With the bottom two games shared, yet again Nicky Boy featuring in a winning partnership, OHA sneaked the morning better ball session to reverse fortunes to take a one point lead into the afternoon matches.

The afternoon session was shared three wins a piece with the halved match in game three, a classic tight match between Clacks & Nick versus Colin & Lethal; this would have been a tense, intense encounter!! The first two games went the way of the ROW, Grant finally recording his first win of the weekend with his captain's armband on. Then OHA fired back with three wins on the bounce, with a degree of synergy OHA skip Hoody also recording his first win in one of these matches. With the ROW employing their squad rotation system for the afternoon session, Kev stood down and a fresh Jon alongside Jack recorded a win for the ROW in the final match.

So courtesy of the morning session win in the better ball matches the OHA edged day two by 2 points to reverse the match score to take a one point lead into the singles matches tomorrow. They will therefore require to at least tie the singles session in pursuit of bringing the Trevor home for the first time since 2012. Hopefully they can deal with this pressure that continues to mount after such a long barren period of suffering at the hands of an ROW team that has dominated in recent times.
The OHA big guns came to the party today, JG & Copey winning both matches, Clacks unbeaten today, Leafy continuing some solid form, Gazza got his win and the ace in the pack for skipper Hoody, Nicky Boy remains unbeaten going into the singles. Suds so dominant on day one couldn't bring home a point today, but remains fired up for tomorrow's denouement. Only Kill remains the only OHA player to yet record a win; he may be sweating whether this may not change with his historic record in the singles, (but will, once again the Trevor throw up another shock - LT).
For the ROW, the team is remarkably, and I am sure they will not mind this being recorded, bolstered by the only two players still with a 100% record to date, Karlos and Wyn being their rocks!!
Surprisingly three really strong ROW boys are yet to record wins, Colin being one but to be fair with three halved matches, he has only lost one game. However perhaps the biggest surprise is that Prichy only has a halved match in the pairs format to his name, this after the new rankings put him comfortably ahead of all comers in success in this format. (Once again another example of how fickle Trevor form can be - LT.) Woz will also be desperate to pick up something in the singles as he will be hurting right now after two tough days.
More evening revelry, with, of course, the singles draw, Trevor forecast and bulls**t a plenty.

Day 3 - The Lion finally Roars in tense finale
Singles Score: OHA 14 ROW 14
The singles set out with some big guns heading the cast list. The top two games that looked on paper to be equally matched proved to be as they both finished all square.
Then the two Scotsman came through with two important wins to set some early momentum the way of the OHA, further enhanced after a great comeback from Joey to beat Jack who led four up early in this match.
At this stage all looking good for Hampton to finally win back the Trevor for the first time in too long.. But with chances to do so at the last two Trevors falling by the wayside as late singles results went the wrong way, nobody from the Hampton team was totally confident at this point. Victory was never going to be assured until that magical fourteenth point was nailed down.
The middle order went the way of the ROW, the tide was turning, momentum changing, nerves a jangling!! Wyn became only the 11th trevorer in the history of this great event to complete a 100% record with an emphatic win against Disco. (this from a man who believed he was only picked for his prowess in the bar - LT. A mighty performance).
JR continued to pile on the singles misery that besets Kill on an annual basis and Woz, like the true legend he is, turned round a troubled weekend by beating a previously buoyant Leafy.
Thankfully Nicky Boy continued his fine form over the weekend remaining unbeaten with a close win over Colin, Gazza sneaked a half against the second unlikely ROW hero over the weekend, Karlos (he also just fell short of becoming another 100%er - LT) and the resurgent Saint won another point, perhaps against the odds by beating the always strong, reliable legal eagle, Lethal.
Three games left on the course, OHA now only needing a half point to tie the singles session and sneak home by a point. News of Jules losing in the anchor game filtered through and the other two remaining matches were very much in the balance.
Firstly Hoody came down 18 against his big buddy Sarge, and with all looking on, the OHA skip had a four footer on the last to half his match and win the Trevor, but a lip out and handshake, an ROW win. Just one game left, Suds against Dronny coming down the final hole all square. The Trevor was all on the final match on the course on the final green. Hampton's newest recruit played the hole impeccably and had a pressure free putt on the last to secure that vital half point.
It was so close, the final five matches all going down the 18th, this reflects how evenly matched the teams are and how the result could have gone either way.
Finally the ROW bandwagon had been stopped and the OHA had their win after another epic encounter.

Trevor's Summary
Well what a year for formbook upsets.
At the very top of the tree, Wyn joining the elite ranks of 100%ers, Karlos coming so close and unbeaten all weekend, Nicky Boy being top dog for the OHA, also unbeaten.
Whilst at the base for the ROW Prich without a win, an unwanted record, his first Trevor without any success. Colin and Kill also winless, although to be fair to Colin, only two loses as involved in three halved matches and also just falling short in his singles match. Kill sadly only recorded a half, enough to save the ignominy of being a 0%er. Woz also rallied with a fine singles win to avoid this unwanted accolade by beating a resurgent Leafy, chastened by discovering how poor his pairs record was with fine performances over the first two days.
Similarly almost back to his best is Dronny and Kev, in an abridged weekend performed admirably. For the OHA Saint remained a force (the OHA skip probably now thankful for Buster's late withdrawal with the Saint filling his boots with much needed team points - LT). and Copey continues to be one of the rocks that any Hampton success is built around. (Even the pressure of having to be head concho in running the 2018 Trevor not being detrimental to his level of performance on the course - LT).
As is the norm the two Hampton big guns from north of the border produced the goods when it mattered in the singles.
Indeed the Celtic brethren enjoyed unbelievable success on singles day, one had to lose out as they faced another in a Wales-Scotland match up, but of the rest none lost a match. 5 wins and 2 halves perhaps confirm the true strength and fire that courses through the blood from those north of Hadrian's Wall or west of Offa's Dyke!!
As to handicap adjustments for 2019, it goes without saying that the top boys will be receiving a suitable cut based on such immaculate play and Saint will surely be due a small snip after two successful years.
At the other end of the table for the ROW, Colin may be offered a little, Woz will need to be carefully examined as it was only a year ago when almost top of the ROW tree. For the OHA both Hoody and Kill seem to sit very near the bottom of the table in recent times and should be dealt with favourably, and perhaps Gazza, after such a long awaited return was dealt with a little too harshly based on past golf, or maybe he just succumbed to the pressure of the Trevor!! I ma sure the new Trevor High Counsel will give due credence to the figures and show due diligence when making decisions for next year.
Of course it must be said, that with the two teams so evenly matched in recent times, that changes will be minimal as the formula seems to be working. Almost now down to one team just having a couple more boys that perform at a higher level than others over the Trevor weekend.
